Handam Coastal walk, Coastal walkway in Aewol, Jeju, South Korea
The Handam Coastal Walk, also known as the Gwakgeum Olle Trail, is a coastal walkway of about 1.2 km in the Aewol area on the west side of Jeju Island, South Korea. The path runs along black lava rock formations, with the open sea on one side and low coastal vegetation on the other.
The trail was recognized in 2009 as one of the 31 hidden scenic spots of Jeju City, a list created to highlight lesser-visited natural places on the island. It forms part of the broader Olle trail network, which was developed across Jeju in the early 2000s to encourage walking along the coast.
The walk is popular with photographers, especially in the early morning or just before sunset when the light turns golden. The cafes lining the nearby street have wide windows facing the sea, and many visitors stop there after walking the trail.
The trail is free and open throughout the year, at any time of day. Parking nearby is limited, so arriving early or on a weekday helps avoid congestion, especially during busy seasons.
In spring, bright yellow canola flowers bloom between the rocks and palm trees along the trail, changing the look of the coastline from week to week. Dogs are welcome on the path, but they must be kept on a leash no longer than 2 meters.
