HMAS Otway, 1966 Oberon-class submarine
HMAS Otway is an Oberon-class submarine now displayed on dry land in Holbrook as part of a museum exhibition. The vessel measures roughly 90 meters (295 feet) in length and shows original features including torpedo tubes, officer quarters, and rotating radar masts.
The submarine was built in Scotland during the 1960s and served the Australian navy until 1994. It was later transported to Holbrook, where it has stood as a land-based display since the late 1990s.
The name Otway honors a line of Australian naval vessels that stretches back through generations of service. Visitors today see the displayed submarine as a symbol of the crews who worked beneath the ocean surface.
The museum sits at the corner of Wallace Street and Albury Street and opens on most weekdays. Ramps and accessible facilities make entry easier for wheelchair users and families with strollers.
A hologram features Mrs. G. Holbrook speaking about her husband and his decorated command from 1914. The museum also preserves a rare Jolly Roger flag from World War II, with only around 30 such flags known to exist worldwide.
