Chemin de Fer Touristique du Haut-Quercy, Tourist railway in Martel, France
The Chemin de Fer Touristique du Haut-Quercy, also known as the Truffle Train, is a heritage railway in Martel, France. It operates along a historic line that runs on a ledge carved into the cliff, offering views of the Dordogne Valley from a height of about 260 feet (80 meters).
The railway line was opened in 1889 and served as a vital link for the region. It was later transformed into a tourist attraction, preserving the original route and some of its historic equipment.
The train is often called the Truffle Train, a nod to the region's truffle-growing past. Passengers ride in open carriages, and the journey includes commentary in French, sharing stories of the area.
The train runs from April to October, with departures from Martel station. It is wise to arrive at least 45 minutes before departure, as seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of travel.
The train travels at a slow pace along a narrow ledge, giving passengers a close look at the rock face. A small museum in the station hall displays old railway objects like models and lanterns.
