Grottes de Presque, Natural caves in Saint-Médard-de-Presque, France

The Grottes de Presque are natural caves located in the village of Saint-Médard-de-Presque, in the Dordogne valley in southwestern France. The caves consist of several passages and chambers, including a tall room where stone formations reach high toward the ceiling and draperies of mineral deposits hang from above.

The caves were discovered in 1825 by chance, when workers broke through a rock during road construction nearby. Since then, they have been open to visitors, and 2025 marked their 200th anniversary.

The Grottes de Presque are known locally for their candle-shaped stalagmites, which rise from the ground in thin, closely spaced rows and give the cave a look unlike most others. Guides lead tours in both French and English, making the formations easy to understand for visitors from different backgrounds.

The inside of the caves stays cool year-round, so bringing a jacket is a good idea even on warm days. The path through the passages is short, but the ground can be uneven or damp, so closed shoes are strongly recommended.

One of the formations inside is called the frozen cascade, a wall of stone that looks like a waterfall stopped in time, though no water moves there at all. These shapes build up over centuries as mineral-rich water drips slowly across the rock surface and hardens.
