Observatoire du Ravoir, Wildlife observation point in Ouzouer-sur-Loire, France
The Observatoire du Ravoir is a wildlife observation point set beside a pond in the Orléans Forest, on the edge of Ouzouer-sur-Loire. From this spot, visitors look out across the water toward the opposite bank, where an osprey pair has built its nest roughly 980 feet (about 300 meters) away.
The osprey almost completely disappeared from France during the 20th century, remaining absent for roughly half a century. In the early 1980s the species began returning to the region, and the Ravoir pond site became one of its first nesting spots.
The osprey, known in French as balbuzard pêcheur, returned to this area in the 1980s after decades of absence, and locals take real pride in its presence. On Sunday afternoons from April to August, volunteers from Loiret Nature Environnement come to the site and lend binoculars to visitors.
The site is reached by a marked forest path from the center of Ouzouer-sur-Loire and is open year-round. Spring and early summer are the best times to visit, when the birds are active on the nest.
A project called Objectif Balbuz@ard has placed cameras directly on the nest, allowing the breeding season to be followed in real time without disturbing the birds. The Ravoir pond is considered one of the very few places in France where an osprey pair can be watched reliably on the nest.
