Hafnaberg, Tourist attraction on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland

Hafnaberg is a line of tall, steep cliffs made of dark volcanic rock on the western coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula, facing the Atlantic Ocean. The cliffs drop sharply into the sea, and from the top you can look straight down at the waves breaking against the rocks below.

The dark lava cliffs were shaped by the volcanic activity that built up the Reykjanes Peninsula over millions of years. Over time, wind and sea have continued to wear and reshape the rock faces, giving them their rough, layered appearance today.

The cliffs of Hafnaberg sit just south of the old fishing village of Hafnir, which gave the area its name. Seabirds like puffins and gulls nest on the rock faces during summer, drawing birdwatchers who come specifically to see them up close.

A marked trail leads from the parking area off road 44 toward Hafnir to the clifftops, and the walk takes around 30 minutes each way. Sturdy shoes and a windproof layer are a good idea, as the wind near the water can be strong even in summer.

Hafnaberg is part of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, so the cliffs are also recognized as a geological record of the earth's past. The layered patterns visible in the rock face show different lava flows stacked on top of each other, something you can read like a timeline as you walk along the edge.
