Valahnúkamöl, Coastal tourist attraction on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland

Valahnúkamöl is a coastal formation at the tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland, made up of a long ridge of rounded black volcanic stones shaped by waves and wind over many years. It sits right next to the steep sea cliff of Valahnúkur, and together they form a raw, open stretch of coastline facing the Atlantic.

The land around Valahnúkamöl sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where two tectonic plates slowly pull apart, and repeated volcanic activity has shaped the Reykjanes Peninsula over thousands of years. The stone ridge itself built up gradually as powerful storms broke off rock from the cliffs and the sea rolled the pieces into their rounded forms.

The ground is uneven and rocky, and can be slippery when wet or icy, so sturdy footwear and warm, windproof clothing are worth bringing. A parking area near the Reykjanesviti lighthouse makes it easy to reach, and the walk along the ridge and cliffs is best done with care, especially in rough weather.

Two red keyboards are fixed into the ground here, left as a nod to the film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, which filmed a scene at this exact spot. They sit among the stones looking completely out of place, and many visitors walk past without knowing what they refer to.
