Cascata das Aguieiras is a waterfall in Alvarenga, Portugal, set within the narrow valley of the Garganta do Paiva. The water comes from the Ribeira das Aguieiras stream, which flows through the granite terrain of the village before dropping sharply over the cliffs that border the Paiva River.
The area around the waterfall has been inhabited for a long time, and nearby stand the remains of the Castle of Carvalhais, a small fortress from the time of the Reconquista, around the 10th or 11th century. It was built to control movement across the Paiva River and to act as a boundary between the Douro region and the Arouca valley.
The waterfall is visible from the Passadiços do Paiva, a walking route that follows the Paiva River and draws many visitors each year. For those who walk it, the fall marks one of the most striking moments along the path.
The waterfall can be reached and seen from two different routes: the Passadiços do Paiva walking trail or the Ponte 516 Arouca suspension bridge. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the paths can be uneven and damp.
The Ribeira das Aguieiras follows the natural cracks and fractures in the granite rock beneath the village before it reaches the Paiva River. This means the stream's path was shaped entirely by the underground structure of the rock, not by the landscape above it.
