Town Hall, Historic building in Vinaròs, Spain

The Casa de la Vila is a Gothic stone building from the 15th century located on Carrer Major in the center of Vinaròs, Spain. Its facade features a pointed arch window, a small balcony, and a coat of arms carved in a diamond shape, all typical of the architectural style of its era.

The building was erected in the 15th century to serve as the town hall of Vinaròs, playing a central role in local governance for many generations. Over time it was used as an archive, a courtroom, and occasionally a jail for people of rank before gradually losing its official function.

The name Casa de la Vila simply means "town hall" in Catalan, linking the building directly to its original role in public life. A niche on the facade, made in 1722 for a statue of Saint Dominic, shows how closely civic and religious traditions were woven together in the town over the centuries.

The building sits on Carrer Major, the main street of Vinaròs, making it easy to reach on foot as part of a walk through the old town. Access to the interior may be through an adjoining building, so it is worth checking on arrival whether a visit inside is possible.

During the 2017 restoration, workers uncovered old frescoes inside the building, including what is considered one of the oldest surviving depictions of the coat of arms of Vinaròs in the area. The frescoes also show figures of angels and other symbols that are now being carefully restored so visitors can see their original colors.
