Mystic Caverns and Crystal Dome are two separate limestone cave systems located about 400 feet apart, connected by passages that stretch over 300 meters underground. The walls throughout display natural mineral formations that developed over thousands of years.
Local settlers first discovered the caves in 1850 and called them by different names over the decades, including Mansion Cave and Wild Horse Cave. The caves received their current names in the mid-20th century during a period of growing tourism in the region.
The caves have been part of local heritage since their discovery and continue to shape how visitors experience this corner of the Ozarks. They represent a connection point where natural wonders drew communities together over generations.
The caves maintain a steady temperature year-round at about 58 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees Celsius), so bring a light jacket regardless of the season. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip since the underground pathways can be slippery in places.
An underground stream flows through the lower level of Crystal Dome and emerges from a rock opening about one mile away on the surface. This hidden waterway reveals how deeply the cave system connects with the landscape above.
