Harrison Courthouse Square Historic District, Historic district in Harrison, Arkansas.
The Harrison Courthouse Square Historic District is a neighborhood containing 54 buildings spread across about 15.5 acres (6.3 hectares), centered on the 1911 Boone County Courthouse and surrounding commercial structures. Today the district holds restaurants, shops, pharmacies, and a Marine Corps Legacy Museum alongside the historic buildings.
The district's buildings were constructed between 1895 and 1948, marking the shift from wooden structures to permanent commercial buildings in the Early Commercial style. This building period shaped Harrison into a regional trade center with architecture that remains largely unchanged today.
The courthouse lawn displays war memorials and serves as the center for local festivals and gatherings throughout the year. Community events like Crawdad Days and the Fall Festival draw residents and visitors to this open space regularly.
The district is easy to explore on foot with parking near the courthouse square and wide sidewalks connecting the historic buildings. Most shops and restaurants are located on ground floors, allowing visitors to browse and eat without navigating complicated layouts.
The area is known in local history as the site where outlaw Henry Starr was shot during his criminal activities in the region. This incident connects the district to a rougher period of the area's past before it became the orderly commercial center it is today.
