Shakespeare Ghost Town Tours, Tourist attraction in Hidalgo County, United States
Shakespeare Ghost Town is a historic site in Hidalgo County with preserved buildings from the late 1800s that arose during a silver mining boom. The ruins include a hotel, a saloon, a mining house, a post office, and other structures that document the daily activity of a mining town from that era.
The town originated as Ralston City in the 1870s during silver mining and reached about 3,000 residents at its peak. After the collapse of the silver economy, only about 50 miners remained, until a second mining boom between 1908 and 1932 brought the town back to life again.
The name Shakespeare was chosen by an English mining engineer and reflects the literary education of the town's founders. The buildings still show how people lived and worked together in this remote mining community.
Visits are only possible with a guide, as solo exploration is not permitted and important for safety. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and plan your visit for cooler months since the area gets very dry and hot.
The site has been preserved by the Hill family since 1935, who deliberately refrain from developing it into a large commercial facility. This preserves the authentic qualities of the place and allows visitors to experience the history nearly unaltered.
