Lokalbahn Lambach–Vorchdorf-Eggenberg, Railway line in Upper Austria, Austria
The Lokalbahn Lambach-Vorchdorf-Eggenberg is a standard gauge railway line running through rural Upper Austria, connecting the Hausruck and Traun regions. It starts at Lambach station, where it meets the main Westbahn line, and ends at Vorchdorf-Eggenberg, stopping at several small stations along the way.
The line opened in 1903 under state management and ran as a steam-powered railway in its early years. In 1931, the private company Stern & Hafferl took over and converted it to electric traction.
The railway links small villages in rural Upper Austria that would otherwise have little public transport access. Riding it gives a clear sense of how people in the region move through their daily routines.
The best starting point is Lambach station, which connects directly to the main rail network and is easy to find. Trains run more often during the day than in the early morning or late evening, so checking times in advance helps.
One of the stops on this line is Au station, whose name is just two letters long, making it one of the shortest station names in Austria. Passengers riding the full route pass through this small curiosity without always noticing what makes it stand out.
