Traunseebahn, Railway line in Gmunden, Austria
The Traunseebahn is a narrow-gauge railway that connects Vorchdorf with Gmunden, traveling through the mountainous Salzkammergut region. Modern vehicles stop at 28 stations and run daily between both terminals.
The railway began operations in 1912 and merged with the Gmunden Tramway in 2018 to form the Traunseetram system. This combination created an integrated transport network for the region.
The railway connects small communities around Traunsee and is woven into daily routines for commuters and students. Travelers use it to move quickly from town centers to lakeside areas and hiking destinations.
The vehicles are fully accessible and run regularly throughout the day. The best way to explore the area is to hop off at different stations and walk through the surrounding villages and forest trails on foot.
The route uses two different electrical voltage systems to switch seamlessly between narrow-gauge railway and street tram sections. This technical arrangement allows vehicles to automatically adapt between different power supplies without interruption.
