Traunseebahn, Railway line in Gmunden, Austria
The Traunseebahn is a narrow-gauge railway in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria, running between Vorchdorf and Gmunden. It operates as part of the Traunseetram system, which combines this line with a street tram section through Gmunden.
The line opened in 1912 to serve passengers and freight in the Salzkammergut valleys. In 2018 it merged with the Gmunden tramway, forming the Traunseetram network that operates today.
The Traunseebahn is part of everyday life for people living along the route, connecting village centers to the lake and surrounding hills. Travelers can watch the landscape shift from small market towns to forested slopes as the train moves south.
Vehicles on the line are accessible and run at regular intervals through the day. Getting off at intermediate stops is a good way to explore the villages and trails along the route without needing a car.
The Traunseetram vehicles can switch between two different electrical systems as they move from the railway section to the street tram section in Gmunden. This means the same vehicle travels from an open rural line straight into city streets without passengers needing to change.
