Schloss Oberweis, Heritage castle in Laakirchen, Austria
Schloss Oberweis is a three-story castle in Laakirchen with a hipped roof that overlooks an artificial pond with a small island set in landscaped grounds. The complex features structured garden and outdoor spaces that define the overall character of the estate.
The castle was first documented in 1383 as a fief of Ulrich Aboltinger von Abolting and has shaped the region since then. Major renovation work took place in 1843, establishing the appearance it retains today.
The castle serves as a venue during the Salzkammergut Festival Gmunden, linking regional artistic traditions with the historical architecture of the site.
The estate is privately operated and managed as a residential complex by Carvatech GmbH, which means public access is limited. Due to its protected heritage status, visitors should check beforehand whether a visit is possible.
During World War II, the Nazi organization Lebensborn operated a children's home called Alpenland at the castle. This dark chapter remains part of the site's complex history and is preserved today through its heritage protection status.
