Naturpark Tiroler Lech, Nature park between Steeg and Vils, Austria.
The Naturpark Tiroler Lech sits along the Northern Limestone Alps and centres on the untamed Lech River, whose gravel banks constantly shift and reshape. The park protects natural meadows, steep rock walls, and dense forests that line both sides of the river.
The park was created in 2004 to protect one of the last natural river landscapes in the Alps. This designation preserved an exceptional ecosystem from being altered by human development.
The Nature Park Centre in Elmen displays how local ecosystems depend on the river and shows the plants and animals that thrive in these wetlands. Guided walks help visitors understand how the landscape has shaped life in the valley.
The Nature Park Centre in Elmen provides visitor information and can be reached by phone. Wear sturdy footwear and dress for changing mountain weather, as riverside trails can be muddy or slippery depending on recent rainfall.
The park holds hundreds of endangered plant species and features a 17-meter tall bird observation tower that lets visitors watch waterfowl and herons up close. From this vantage point, you gain insights into river ecology that ground-level trails cannot offer.
