Swan Valley Nyungah Community, Aboriginal settlement in Swan Valley, Western Australia.
Swan Valley Nyungah Community is an Indigenous settlement located on bushland between the Perth suburbs of Lockridge and Eden Hill. The area consists of residential spaces developed and maintained by Nyungah people and their families over many decades.
The land was traditionally used by Nyungah people as a gathering ground before female members of the Kickett, Nettles, Warrell, and Parfitt families purchased it in 1941. This acquisition enabled the community to establish their own residential settlement with greater independence and control.
The community serves as a gathering place where the Nyungah people maintain their language, artistic practices, and traditional knowledge. Visitors can observe how these customs shape daily life and are passed down through families and community activities.
The community is an active residential area that requires respectful behavior and awareness as a living space. It is advisable to check in advance about community programs or guided visits to gain the most meaningful experience.
Archaeological evidence shows that Indigenous people have lived continuously in this region for over 38,000 years. This makes it one of the oldest documented human settlement areas in the region.
