Les Charmettes, Camping resort in Les Mathes, France.
Les Charmettes is a campsite in Les Mathes, in the Charente-Maritime department, set within a pine forest a short distance from the Atlantic coast. The grounds are divided into pitches for tents, caravans, and mobile homes, most separated by tall hedgerows that create a sense of enclosure between neighbors.
The site grew during the second half of the 20th century, when the stretch of Atlantic coast around La Palmyre began attracting summer visitors in large numbers. Over the following decades, the facilities were gradually expanded to keep pace with the growing demand for coastal camping in the region.
Les Charmettes sits within a pine forest setting that is typical of the Charente-Maritime coast, giving the whole place a shaded, woody feel. Many families return here year after year, which gives it the feel of a familiar summer meeting point rather than a passing stop.
The campsite is open during the warmer months and closes in autumn, so visits outside the main season are not possible. Most facilities on the grounds can be reached on foot, and the nearest Atlantic beaches are a short bike or car ride away.
The hedgerows that divide the pitches have been growing for decades and in some areas reach a height that makes each plot feel like a small enclosed garden. This dense planting also acts as a natural windbreak against the Atlantic gusts that can roll in from the coast.
