Le Lac, Lakeside campground in Virieu-le-Grand, France
Le Lac is a lakeside campground positioned along a freshwater lake in Virieu-le-Grand, offering water access for swimming and fishing. The facility provided tent pitches and mobile home spaces with sanitary buildings, electrical connections, and parking areas.
The campground operated as a municipal facility until 2016, when it closed following a legal dispute between the manager and the Bugey Sud community authorities. This closure ended decades of operation at the site.
The site reflects French outdoor recreation traditions where visitors gather by the water for leisure and nature time. This form of recreation remains central to how people in the region spend their free moments.
The area is best visited on weekends when more people come to enjoy the water and the surroundings feel more active. The newer additions like docks and playgrounds allow for different activities, whether you want to swim or simply spend time by the lake.
After the campground closed, the beach area underwent renovation with new docks for water access and dry toilets installed throughout. These renovations have allowed visitors to continue enjoying the lake even though the original camping operation no longer exists.
