Basilique Saint-Martin, Catholic basilica in central Tours, France

Description

Basilica Saint-Martin is a neo-Byzantine church in central Tours featuring twin towers and a central dome topped with a bronze statue of the saint. The interior combines spacious halls with an underground crypt that preserves original remains beneath the modern structure.

History

An original church from the 5th century stood at this location and underwent multiple reconstructions over centuries before its destruction during the French Revolution. The current basilica was built between 1886 and 1924 as a new structure to continue the important pilgrimage tradition.

Culture

The basilica draws pilgrims from across Europe who come to honor Martin, one of France's most revered saints and a figure deeply rooted in local devotion. Visitors experience a living space of prayer where people continue centuries-old traditions of veneration.

Practical

The building is open daily and visitors can enter freely to explore the interior or attend services without special knowledge required. Guided tours of the crypt are available upon inquiry and offer deeper insight into the underground spaces.

Did you know?

The crypt contains a replica of Martin's original tomb and marks the exact spot where his burial site was discovered in 1860. This finding reinforced the location's importance as a pilgrimage destination.
