Le balaou, Restaurant in La Couarde-sur-Mer, France
Le Balaou is a small eatery on the island of Ré, tucked into a quiet street of La Couarde-sur-Mer. Its modest front opens to a room with wooden tables and soft lighting, where the smell of grilled fish and simmering broths hangs in the air.
Before becoming a place to eat, the building served small fishing families who stored nets and sorted the morning catch nearby. In the late twentieth century it was converted for serving meals, keeping the low ceiling and thick walls of the old fish shed.
The name on the sign refers to a local sailboat once common along this coast, and you will notice small drawings of it on the menu. Diners tend to speak in low voices, and the rhythm of service follows the slow pace of the village rather than a city restaurant.
The entrance is on a low step from the street, and the door is narrow, so large bags are best left at your lodging. Evenings are the busiest moment here, and a short walk from the shore makes it easy to arrive on foot.
A small window by the last table still looks onto the old courtyard where nets were once mended, and some guests mistake it for a decoration. If you visit at lunch, you may hear the cook call out an order using the local name for a fish that does not appear on printed menus elsewhere.
