La Sauceda, Restaurant in Buelles, Peñamellera Baja, Spain
La Sauceda is a small restaurant in the village of Buelles, in the municipality of Peñamellera Baja, in Asturias, Spain. It occupies an old building with wooden beams and simple furnishings made from local materials.
The restaurant was opened in 2000 by Ramón Alzola and his wife María Rosa García, who wanted to serve homemade Asturian food in a welcoming family setting. About five years ago, their niece María Teresa Mira took over the kitchen, continuing alongside her son Marcos Martínez.
It is a good idea to book ahead, especially on weekends and during busy seasons. The restaurant is in a small village, so arriving by car is the most practical option.
In 2019, La Sauceda won the prize for the best fabada in the world, a bean stew considered one of Asturias's most traditional dishes. That recognition brought the restaurant attention well beyond the local area.
