Esglèsia de Sant Domingo, Catholic church in Dalt Vila, Ibiza, Spain.
The Esglèsia de Sant Domingo features a single nave covered by a barrel vault and decorated with frescoes painted by Vicent Matas in 1884, while its distinctive ochre tile domes cap each side chapel and contrast with the whitewashed walls of the exterior facade.
Originally founded in the late 16th century when Dominican friars received land donations from the Universitat de Eivissa, construction began in 1592 and continued for several decades, with the building later serving as the town hall after the dissolution of the religious community in 1835.
The church has served as a place where religious and civic communities have coexisted for centuries, hosting traditional festivities, processions and daily worship that reflect the spiritual identity of Ibiza and its residents.
The church is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with mass held at 7:00 p.m. during fall and winter and at 8:00 p.m. during spring and summer throughout the year.
The building uniquely combines its original religious function with its role as the town hall, a result of the 19th-century dissolution of the Dominican monastery and partial conversion of the convent structure for civic use.
