The wine cellars extend through 120 kilometers of limestone tunnels, containing 1.25 million bottles stored at a constant temperature of 12°C.
The tunnels originated in the 15th century as limestone mines for constructing Chisinau before their conversion to wine storage in the 1950s.
The National Oenotec collection within Cricova preserves rare wines, including pieces from Hermann Göring's collection obtained after World War II.
Tours require advance reservations and visitors should wear warm clothing as the underground temperature remains at 12 degrees Celsius throughout the year.
The facility produces sparkling red wine called kodrinskoie using Cabernet Sauvignon grapes through the traditional French Methode Champenoise.
