Tour Saint-Nicolas
Tour Saint-Nicolas is an old stone building in the center of Paray-le-Monial with a distinctive tower featuring small windows and traditional arches. Inside, open spaces with aged wooden stairs and stone walls now serve as a gallery for art exhibitions displaying mosaics, paintings, and sculptures.
The building was originally constructed in the 1500s as a church to replace an older chapel that had burned down. After the French Revolution, it ceased to serve as a church and was repurposed as a prison, guardhouse, and later became a venue for art exhibitions.
The name Tour Saint-Nicolas reflects the religious roots of the site, honoring Saint Nicholas and the spiritual life that once centered here. Today, the space draws people for art exhibitions and gatherings, creating a bridge between the town's past and its present cultural life.
The building is centrally located and easily reached on foot from the main square, making it convenient to visit without a long walk. The area is quieter in the morning and becomes more active in the afternoon, so visiting at different times offers varying experiences.
The building hosts an annual mosaic competition held every summer, bringing together local and visiting artists. This competition has made it a significant hub for contemporary art expression in the region.
