Mianyue Line, Historic railway track in Alishan National Forest, Taiwan.
The Mianyue Line is a historic railway in the Alishan National Forest that runs 14 kilometers through dense woodland. It connects the old Alishan station to Songshan station, crossing multiple tunnels and bridges along its path.
The line was built in 1915 to transport timber from the mountains. Operations ceased in 1934 when logging in the region came to an end.
The railway passes near Tashan Mountain, which the Tsou people call Hocubu and regard as a spiritual home for their ancestors. This reverence remains visible in how local communities continue to respect and interact with the land today.
Access to the line requires a permit requested 5 to 60 days before your visit. Daily entry is limited to 300 people, so booking early is important.
The trail along the former railway passes through collapsed tunnels where visitors must climb using hand ropes and chains. This passage gives a direct feel for how challenging the original railway engineering was.
