Hamdeok Beach, Sand beach in Jeju-si, South Korea
Hamdeok Beach is a sand beach on the north coast of Jeju-si, on Jeju Island, South Korea. It is made up of three adjoining sections separated by lava rock formations and small bridges, with Seoubong Peak, a small volcanic hill, rising beside it.
Jeju Island has a long history as a fishing community, and beaches like Hamdeok were traditionally used by villagers for fishing and diving. As tourism on the island grew from the 1980s onward, the beach gradually developed the facilities and access roads visitors see today.
Hamdeok is a favorite gathering spot for local families and young couples, who come to walk the shore and sit at the seafront cafes. The area has a relaxed, unhurried pace, where people linger over coffee or fresh fruit while watching the tide shift.
The beach is about 20 kilometers from Jeju City and is easy to reach by rental car or public bus. Checking the tide times before visiting is useful, since low tide reveals wide sandbars while high tide makes the swimming area feel smaller.
The sandbar at Hamdeok disappears completely at high tide and reappears each morning as the water pulls back, giving the beach a noticeably different shape depending on when you arrive. Walking out on the flat, shallow sandbar at low tide feels like crossing a temporary island that will be gone by evening.
