Horseshoe Bay
Horseshoe Bay is a beach in Port Elliot with a gently curved shoreline bordered by rocky headlands and granite cliffs. The sheltered waters remain calm, making it suitable for swimming and family activities throughout most conditions.
Port Elliot was founded in the early 1800s as one of the first European settlements on South Australia's coast. The town developed from a busy trading port into a quiet coastal village, with many original buildings still standing along its main street.
The bay serves as a gathering place where families and swimmers come to enjoy the water and relax by the shore. People use the beach for swimming, picnicking, and taking in views of the surrounding headlands and ocean.
The beach is free to visit during daylight hours and features public toilets, showers, barbecue facilities, and a nearby kiosk for snacks and drinks. It is accessible for people with disabilities and has lifeguards watching the flagged area during summer months.
From May through September, Southern Right Whales pass through the waters off the coast and sometimes swim close to the bay. These whale sightings, with animals breaching and moving near the shore, offer visitors an unexpected encounter with marine life.
