Irakli, Sand beach in Emona, Bulgaria

Irakli is a natural sand beach near the village of Emona on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. The shoreline borders sandstone headlands on both ends, and at its southern edge the Vaya River meets the sea, forming a small wetland.

Irakli beach remained undeveloped for a long time partly because the surrounding land was set apart as a protected zone during the communist period. After 1989, environmental groups and local activists began pushing back against construction plans that aimed to turn the area into a resort.

Irakli has a reputation among nature lovers and campers as one of the last free beaches on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. Many visitors bring their own food and gear precisely because there are no sunbeds or umbrellas, and that absence is part of the appeal.

The road leading to the beach is rough, so a vehicle with good ground clearance helps, or you can park further away and walk the last stretch. There are no lifeguards on the beach, so extra care is needed when swimming, especially with children.

The sand dunes at the southern end of the beach are home to rare plants such as the sand lily, which is now almost gone from most of the Bulgarian coast. This section is protected by law and marked with signs that ask visitors to stay on the paths.
