Plage des Demoiselles is a sandy beach on the Atlantic coast of Saint-Jean-de-Monts in the Vendée, reached from the Esplanade de la Mer near the neighborhood of the same name. The shore is flat and open, with fine sand running along the waterfront and a wide view out over the ocean.
The coast around Saint-Jean-de-Monts was once sparsely populated and used mainly by local fishermen who lived along the Vendée shoreline. Over time the area attracted more visitors, and the beach gradually became a destination for seaside holidays.
The name "Demoiselles" (young ladies) gives the beach a somewhat poetic, old-fashioned feel that stands out among the more generic beach names along this stretch of coast. Today the shore is used by a mix of families, walkers, and swimmers who come for a simple day by the sea.
Lifeguards are on duty in July and August and watch over a marked swimming area, which makes the beach easier to use for families with children. A tiralo device is available for people with reduced mobility who want to get into the water.
Dogs are allowed on the beach only between October 1 and April 30, which gives the off-season a noticeably different feel compared to the busy summer months. Small beach huts can also be rented here, a practical option that is not common on most nearby beaches.
