Stadsstrand

Stadsstrand is a sand beach along the Oosterhamrikkanaal in central Groningen, situated next to the modern DOT building. The area features open sandy space for relaxing, swimming, and spending time with views of the canal water.

The beach emerged from the Open Lab Ebbinge project, which transformed an unused urban space into a new recreational area. This redesign shows how the city repurposed existing land to create more public space for residents.

The beach serves as a gathering place where city dwellers pause from daily routines and connect with the water. It has become a meeting spot for locals of all ages who want to experience their city from a different perspective.

The beach is located at Vrydemalaan 2 and remains freely accessible 24 hours a day for everyone. Nearby options for food and drinks are available on site for visitors.

The beach regularly hosts sporting events such as beach volleyball tournaments, bootcamp training, and frisbee league competitions. These organized activities give the beach an active sports culture that becomes especially lively on warmer days.
