Mustafa Centre
Mustafa Centre is a 24-hour shopping mall on Syed Alwi Road in Little India, Singapore, spread across several floors packed with goods of all kinds. The range covers jewelry, electronics, clothing, groceries, and household items, and the building also houses a hotel and a currency exchange counter.
The business traces back to 1952, when Haji Mohamed Mustafa came from India and started selling food items in Singapore. His son Mustaq Ahmad opened a clothing shop in the 1970s, and that small store gradually grew into the large complex that took the name Mustafa Centre in 1995.
The centre sits in the heart of Little India, where shops selling South Asian groceries, spices, and textiles line the surrounding streets. Inside, the mix of languages heard in the aisles and the wide range of goods on display show how the place serves people from many different backgrounds.
The mall is a short walk from Farrer Park and Jalan Besar MRT stations, so getting there by public transport is straightforward. The building is large and densely packed, so setting aside enough time to explore each floor at a comfortable pace is a good idea.
Mustafa Centre was the first shopping mall in Singapore to stay open around the clock, well before this became common elsewhere. As a result, the store fills up late at night with travelers arriving from the airport who head straight there to pick up supplies.
