Aruch, Medieval village near Mount Aragats, Armenia.
Aruch is a village on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats in Armenia. The settlement consists of stone buildings scattered among fields and pastureland, forming a simple rural layout.
The village began in the 6th century as a winter camp for the royal army and later became a permanent military post under the Mamikonian family. The transformation into a fortified place followed different phases of war and settlement.
The village gets its name from an ancient fortress and shows how religious and secular power coexisted here. Visitors can see at the ruins how the community grew around the monastery.
The location lies in a mountainous area with straightforward access and can be explored on foot, with most important structures close together. The best time to visit is in warmer weather when the paths are dry and easy to walk.
Next to the 7th century monastery stand the remains of a palace, which makes this place unusual. This rare combination shows how secular and religious buildings coexisted in this mountain region.
