Cape Point Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Simon's Town, South Africa

Cape Point Nature Reserve is a coastal protected area near Simon's Town featuring dramatic cliffs that rise high above the sea. The landscape contains diverse habitats with native vegetation, hiking trails, and views of two lighthouses positioned on the headland.

Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama encountered this location in 1497 during his voyage around Africa's southern tip and named it for the stormy conditions. The area later became significant for maritime navigation and was eventually protected as a reserve.

The reserve protects native plant communities and fynbos vegetation that define the local landscape and support diverse wildlife. Walking through the area, you notice how these plants have adapted to the rocky terrain and strong coastal winds.

You can reach the upper area by funicular from the parking lot or by walking up a steep trail. Wear sturdy shoes and prepare for changing weather, as the exposed hilltop is often windy and can shift quickly.

Two lighthouses stand on the headland, with the newer one positioned lower than the original to remain visible through fog. This unusual arrangement reveals how sailors had to navigate the treacherous conditions at this dangerous point.
