Coto de las canteras
El Coto Las Canteras is an old site in Osuna with stone walls and ruins reflecting the area's agricultural heritage. The place consists of irregularly arranged fortifications and structures whose remains bear the marks of decades of weather and use.
The site was used by the Turdetani more than 2500 years ago when they began quarrying stone from this location. Later, the Romans took over the place and used its stone resources for their own construction projects throughout the region.
The name refers to the quarrying activities and the historical role this place held in the area's agricultural system. Visitors can still see traces of this past in the walls and structures that speak to the work of earlier generations.
The site is located near the center of Osuna and can be reached on foot in a few minutes or by car in a short drive. Visitors should respect the ruins and avoid climbing on the walls to ensure safety and help preserve the place.
From a natural viewpoint at almost 400 feet (120 meters) high, the ancients could control and observe the entire surrounding countryside and monitor trade routes and travelers. This strategic height allowed them to oversee movements throughout the region.
