Die Campinginsel
Die Campinginsel is a campground situated directly on the Regnitz river in Bamberg with approximately 170 plots for tents and motorhomes, arranged in sunny and shaded areas. The grounds feature modern sanitary facilities including over 30 showers, baby changing rooms, a playground with trampolines and table tennis tables, fishing decks along the river, a fountain with flowing water, and a restaurant called Hoffmanns-Klause.
The grounds were founded by Fritz Hoffmann and reflect his artistic vision, evident in the hand-painted murals in the sanitary facilities and the custom fountains he built. The site has remained family-operated, preserving the tradition of creating a creative and personal destination for guests.
The name reflects how the site sits like an island amid nature along the river, while welcoming visitors into a space where handmade decorations and regular art exhibitions shape the atmosphere. The local Franconian restaurant Hoffmanns-Klause serves regional specialties and creates a gathering place where guests from different countries meet and connect.
The site is located about 0.8 miles (1.3 km) from Bamberg's city center and is easily reached via the bus stop directly in front of the entrance, with a journey time of about 15 minutes to the old town. By bicycle, the ride takes about 10 minutes, and the paths along the Regnitz are well-marked and flat, making them particularly pleasant for families.
The grounds close with a barrier at 10 p.m., directing late arrivals to an external parking area and ensuring a peaceful nighttime environment along the river. This security measure preserves the tranquil setting that visitors come to experience.
