Oasi Gole del Calore
Oasi Gole del Calore is a campground within a 120-hectare protected natural area defined by five deep gorges carved by the Calore Lucano river through rock formations. The site combines walking trails through woodlands and riverside vegetation, picnic areas, and recreational activities like canoeing and pedal boats on calm waters.
The gorges formed over thousands of years as the Calore Lucano river carved deeper into the rock, exposing different geological layers and creating the steep valley walls visible today. Medieval stone bridges and the remains of old water mills scattered along the area demonstrate how people historically worked and lived in harmony with this landscape.
The gorges hold deep meaning for the local community of Felitto as part of the Cilento National Park landscape. Visitors today experience the place as a retreat where traditional Mediterranean nature remains largely unchanged, connecting them to centuries of local life tied to these rivers and forests.
The site is easy to reach from the main road between Castel San Lorenzo and Felitto and offers walking trails ranging from flat sections to steeper stretches that take four to five hours to complete. Bring comfortable footwear, a light jacket, a water bottle, and binoculars since the gorge climate is damp and cool with good wildlife viewing opportunities.
A striking geological formation is the Marmitte dei giganti, giant bowl-shaped holes carved by swirling river currents over centuries into the solid rock. Another notable feature is the Ponte di Pretatetta, a natural bridge created when two large rock slabs came together and became wedged across the river.
