Lac de Chaudanne, Artificial lake in Castellane, France
Lac de Chaudanne is an artificial lake near Castellane enclosed by limestone cliffs and steep valley sides along the Verdon River. The water sits deep within rocky terrain, creating a narrow reservoir with dramatic surrounding slopes.
The dam was built in 1953 to create a second water reservoir along the Verdon River for the region. It has been maintained regularly over the decades to ensure its continued operation.
The residents of Demandolx village, situated on the surrounding hilltops, maintain a minimal human presence around the lake.
Swimming and water sports are not permitted on the lake, though fishing is allowed with proper licenses. The steep shores limit direct access, so visitors can best view the water from elevated vantage points nearby.
The water displays a striking turquoise color caused by minerals in the Verdon River. This natural shade makes it immediately recognizable and sets it apart from surrounding reservoirs in the valley.
