Barragem do Alqueva
Barragem do Alqueva is a hydroelectric dam near Moura that creates a large reservoir across the Guadiana River. The structure spans the valley with its concrete wall and gates, holding back water to generate electricity and supply irrigation to the agricultural lands downstream.
The dam was constructed in the late 20th century and ranks among the largest hydroelectric projects on the Iberian Peninsula. It became important for the region's development by providing power and water resources to Alentejo and neighboring areas.
The dam can be viewed from nearby vantage points along the shoreline that offer clear views of the entire structure. Access is straightforward by local roads, and visiting during daylight hours allows you to see the full scale of the installation.
The reservoir created by this dam is one of Europe's largest freshwater bodies and dramatically changed the local landscape. Visitors often notice how the massive expanse of water has transformed the dry Alentejo plains and opened up water-based activities like boating and water sports.
