Bertrand du Guesclin, Statue in Broons, France
Bertrand du Guesclin is a metal statue standing outdoors in Broons. The figure shows a knight in armor with a determined face, and the shiny surface catches the sunlight when weather is clear.
The town has honored this 14th-century soldier for a long time, and the current metal statue replaced an older stone monument from 1840. Bertrand du Guesclin was born nearby at the small castle of La Motte-Broons and later became a military leader for the king of France.
Local school trips stop here so children can learn about the knight who is part of the town’s identity. During small ceremonies, residents gather near the figure to remember their shared roots.
You can find the statue in a visible part of the town where people often walk and gather. The area around it is flat and easy to move through, so a short stop fits naturally into a walk around Broons.
The current statue was designed by Patrick Berthaud in 2019, which is much more recent than many visitors expect. This modern metal work replaced an older version, giving the town a fresh connection to a figure who was once known as the black dog of Brocéliande.
