Tom Crean, Statue in Ballinvoher, Kenmare, Ireland

Tom Crean is a statue in Ballinvoher, in the Kenmare Municipal District of County Kerry, Ireland. It depicts the Irish Antarctic explorer Tom Crean in dark metal, standing on a stone base, with a steady expression and clothing suited to cold conditions.

Tom Crean was born in a small village in County Kerry and took part in several Antarctic expeditions in the early 1900s, sailing with Robert Scott and Ernest Shackleton. His role in keeping crews alive during some of the harshest conditions of those journeys brought him lasting recognition.

The statue stands in a small memorial garden in Ballinvoher, close to the center of Kenmare, and is easy to reach on foot or by car. Parking is available nearby, and signs around the site give context about the life of the person portrayed.

Although Tom Crean was among the most experienced polar explorers of his time, he returned quietly to Kenmare after his expeditions and ran a pub there, rarely speaking publicly about his adventures. This modesty surprises many visitors who come across his story for the first time.
