Mural de la Prehistoria, Mural in Viñales, Cuba

The Mural de la Prehistoria is a large outdoor painting on a natural rock face near the town of Viñales, in western Cuba. The wall stands roughly 120 meters tall and 160 meters wide, and it is covered with figures of prehistoric animals and early humans rendered in bold colors directly on the stone.

The mural was created in 1959 by Cuban painter Leovigildo González Morillo, who had previously studied under the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. To paint the higher sections of the rock face, he directed around twenty local farmers who descended the wall using ropes and parachute harnesses.

The Mural de la Prehistoria depicts prehistoric creatures and early humans in a style that mixes scientific imagery with folk painting. Because it covers a natural rock face rather than a built wall, it feels less like an art gallery and more like a page torn from an ancient story.

The painting is visible from a distance, but walking closer gives a much better sense of the scale and the individual figures. The path to reach it is short but runs over uneven ground, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.

Before a single brushstroke could be applied, the team spent months removing thick layers of plants and mineral deposits from the rock surface. Metal tubes were also driven into the stone to channel rainwater away and protect the paint from moisture damage.
