Sunset Point, Scenic viewpoint in Göreme, Turkey
Sunset Point is a hilltop viewpoint on the edge of Göreme, in the Cappadocia region of Turkey. From the top, you look out over the valleys, the volcanic rock formations known as fairy chimneys, and the rooftops of the town below.
Göreme sits in a landscape shaped by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, which left behind the soft tuff formations that define the panorama today. The hill gradually became known as a natural viewpoint as tourism grew in the region during the late 20th century.
The hill is locally known as Aşıklar Tepesi, which translates to Lovers' Hill in Turkish. This name reflects how people actually use the spot, as couples come here for proposals, wedding photos, and quiet evenings together.
The hill is reachable on foot from Göreme town center, but the path is short and steep, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. Arriving early for sunrise or about an hour before sunset gives the best light and helps avoid crowds.
Although the spot is known for sunsets, early morning is often the more striking time to visit: dozens of hot air balloons rise into the sky at once, clearly visible from the hill. In the evening, after the sun drops, the call to prayer from nearby mosques drifts across the valleys and adds a layer to the experience that many visitors do not expect.
