Karmazinai cognitive trail
The Karmazinai cognitive trail is a nature path near Dūkštos that winds through forests and hillsides along the Neris River. The route spans about 7 kilometers on gravel and forest paths, connecting ancient burial mounds from the 5th to 8th centuries with modern walking features such as rest areas and viewpoints.
The burial mounds of Karmazinai date from the 5th to 8th centuries and belong to Baltic tribespeople who lived in the region. Three of these mounds have been restored and remain the only examples in Lithuania still visible in their reconstructed form today.
This place reflects the spiritual beliefs of ancient Baltic tribes who saw the Neris River as a path for the souls of the dead moving westward. The restored burial mounds and sacred sites throughout the park show how these early people connected their daily lives to their ancestors and the natural world.
The path takes about three hours to walk and is manageable for most visitors with average fitness. Several barbecue spots along the route have tables, benches, and covered wooden shelters, so you can have a meal even if weather turns rainy.
The Velniakampis cliff rises about 60 meters above the river and was believed in old folklore to be a gathering place for witches and spirits, a story that still lives in local tales today. From the top after climbing the stairs, you get a sweeping view of the river's curves and surrounding forests.
