Bauernkriegssäule, Monument on Kornmarkt in Mühlhausen, Germany
The Bauernkriegssäule is a bronze monument standing approximately 23 feet (7 meters) tall on Kornmarkt, depicting a collapsed farmer atop stacked vessels, harvest offerings, and tools representing the peasant class and their demands for social justice during the German Peasants' War.
Unveiled on April 5, 2025, the monument commemorates the 500th anniversary of the German Peasants' War of 1525, based on a drawing by Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer from his first German-language mathematics textbook, which depicted a fallen farmer symbolizing the defeated peasant uprising.
The monument represents the first fully realized three-dimensional interpretation of Dürer's original 1525 sketch, transforming a historic illustration into a modern memorial that honors the fight for freedom and social rights that the peasants sought during the Reformation era.
The monument was funded through a nationwide donation campaign that raised approximately 250,000 euros, with contributions from over 210 donors, the city of Mühlhausen providing 100,000 euros, and the state of Thuringia contributing 25,000 euros through Lotto Thüringen.
Artist Timm Kregel from Kyffhäuserkreis created this bronze sculpture after intensive study of Dürer's work, cast at Kunstgießerei Altglienicke in Berlin, bearing the inscription 'Anno Domini 1525' and commemorating an event that Dürer himself witnessed but could never have memorialized during his lifetime.
