Meridianas
The Meridianas is a sailing ship and museum vessel moored on the Danė River in Klaipėda. It measures approximately 52 meters long, 8.75 meters wide, and has a draft of about 3.5 meters, with three or four masts.
The ship was built in 1948 in Turku, Finland, and initially served as a training vessel for Soviet sailors. After 1967, it became a restaurant on the river and was later restored as a museum ship by the city.
The Meridianas carries a name rooted in astronomy and reflects the city's maritime character. Today, locals and visitors see this ship as a symbol of Klaipėda's connection to the sea and its seafaring heritage.
The ship is located along the Danė waterfront near Biržo Bridge and is easily accessible on foot from the city center. Visitors can view the exterior and see authentic details including the propeller, wooden structures, and original ballast stones.
The ship once trained Soviet sailors across the Baltic Sea and was commanded by renowned captains like Vilius Pakalniškis and Zenonas Kaupas. Of approximately 48 similar ships from that era, only a handful remain today, making the Meridianas a rare survivor of maritime history.
