Old Nessebar Windmill, Windmill in Nessebar, Bulgaria
The Old Nessebar Windmill is a wooden windmill on the narrow isthmus connecting the old peninsula town of Nessebar to the mainland in Bulgaria. It stands on a stone base and has three floors, with a rotating cap on top designed to face the wind.
The mill was originally built in the 19th century and worked as an active grain mill for many years. After being damaged and later dismantled, it was rebuilt in the 1970s as a replica based on old photographs and the accounts of people who remembered it.
The windmill sits at the entrance to Nessebar's old town and is easy to reach on foot from the main road. Visiting early in the morning or on weekdays keeps the experience quieter, as the area draws large crowds during summer.
Although the current structure is a reconstruction, the original mill could rotate fully on its base to point its blades into the wind from any direction. Old photographs show it facing different ways, which was a deliberate feature of how it was built and operated.
