Cascade de Bucatoghju, Waterfall in Santa-Maria-Poggio, Corsica, France
The Cascade de Bucatoghju is a small waterfall in the area of Santa-Maria-Poggio, set in the hills of the Castagniccia region in Corsica, France. The water runs over rounded rocks and drops into a natural pool at the base, fed by a mountain spring that keeps it flowing year-round.
The Castagniccia region has been inhabited for centuries, and streams like this one supplied water to the surrounding villages and their livestock. Over a long period, the water shaped the rocky bed into the forms visible today.
The name Bucatoghju comes from Corsican and refers to the hollowed shape that water has carved into the rock over time. Walking along the stream, you can see how the current has smoothed and shaped the stones into rounded forms.
A short trail leads from a small parking area through the forest to the waterfall, and sturdy shoes are strongly recommended because the path can be uneven and slippery near the rocks. Arriving early in the morning is a good way to avoid the crowds that tend to gather on hot summer days.
The waterfall sits at the entrance of a longer canyon that experienced canyoners can descend over the course of several hours, making it both a family picnic spot and the starting point of a demanding water route at the same time. Few places in Corsica combine these two very different uses so naturally in the same location.
