Transrapid 09, Magnetically levitated train in Nortrup, Germany.
The Transrapid 09 is a magnetically levitated train measuring approximately 249 feet (75.8 meters) in length and 14 feet (4.25 meters) in height, designed for regional transit with capacity for 156 seated and 165 standing passengers.
Built by ThyssenKrupp Transrapid between 2005 and 2007, this was the final maglev train manufactured in Germany and operated on the test facility in Emsland until operations ceased in 2011.
The train was purchased in 2017 by H. Kemper GmbH for 200,001 euros, honoring Hermann Kemper who pioneered magnetic levitation technology with his 1934 patent that established foundations for high-speed maglev systems.
Two sections of the train now serve as meeting and exhibition spaces in Nortrup, presenting the history and technical developments of Transrapid technology to visitors and conference participants.
This driverless maglev train featured cameras integrated into its LED headlights instead of traditional front windows, enabling weight reduction while maintaining operational safety during test runs at speeds up to 314 miles per hour (505 kilometers per hour).
