Saab 340, Aircraft monument in Rystad, Linköpings kommun, Sweden
The Saab 340 monument is a retired prototype aircraft mounted on a tall pole near the E4 highway at the edge of Rystad, a village close to Linköping in Sweden. The plane still carries the registration SE-ISF and displays its fuselage, engines, and wings in their original form.
This aircraft was the very first Saab 340 prototype and made its maiden flight on January 25, 1983, piloted by chief test pilot Per Pellebergs. After logging over 600 flight hours, it landed for the last time in 1984 and was later placed as a monument at the entrance to Saab's factory airfield.
The monument stands right along the E4 highway near the eastern entrance to Linköping and can be spotted while driving past. A short stop is possible at any time since the site is outdoors and open, though the grass nearby can grow tall and may hide uneven ground.
The aircraft is not simply parked on the ground but mounted on a tall pole so that its nose points skyward, as if it is about to take off. This detail makes it stand out from a distance and gives the impression of a plane frozen mid-flight.
